According to the CRA website, the disability amount is a non-refundable tax credit used to reduce income tax payable on your income tax and benefit return. This amount includes a supplement for persons under 18 years of age at the end of the year. All or part of this amount may be transferred to your spouse or common-law partner, or another supporting person. A qualified practitioner has to complete and certify that you have a severe and prolonged impairment and its effects.

If you receive Canada Pension Plan or Quebec Pension Plan disability benefits, workers' compensation benefits, or other types of disability or insurance benefits, it does not necessarily mean you are eligible for the DTC. These programs have other purposes and different criteria, such as an individual's inability to work.

To be eligible, the person must be “markedly restricted” in terms of speaking, hearing, walking, eliminating (bowel or bladder), feeding, dressing or performing mental functions of daily life.

If applying for this credit retroactively, a refund of up to $15,000 can be applied for through T1 Adjustments which our office prepares for as little as $60.00 per year. Figures for dependent children can be even higher (CDB - Child Disability Benefit)
